Retaining an accident lawyer is necessary if you sustained a cervical spine injury following a fall or a car accident. Cervical spine injuries resulting from a fall or car accident range from mild strains to permanent disability.  While the vast majority of back injuries sustained in a car accident occurs to the cervical spine, it is important to recognize the other areas of the spine which could be impacted by a fall or car accident.

The five types of spinal cord injuries from a Fall or Car Accident:

  1. Cervical Spine Injury from Fall or Car Accident: Injury to this section of the spinal cord occurs to the cervical vertebrae (C1-C7) that includes the neck area.   The cervical spine includes the first seven vertebrae of the spinal cord starting at the base of the skull.
  2. Thoracic Spine Injury from Fall or Car Accident: Injury to this section of the spinal cord occurs to the Thoracic vertebrae in the upper back (T1-T12). The thoracic spine includes twelve vertebrae starting at the bottom of the cervical spine to the top of the lumbar spine.
  3. Lumbar Spine Injury from Fall or Car Accident: Injury to this section of the spinal cord occurs to the Lumbar vertebrae in the lower back (L1-L5).  The lumbar spine includes five vertebrae starting at the base of the thoracic spine down to the base of the spine.  The spinal cord itself does not extend beyond this region.
  4. Sacral Spine Injury from Fall or Car Accident: Injuries to this area of the back does affect the spinal cord itself, but rather the five nerve root segments. The sacrum itself has five separate vertebrae (S1-S5) that fuse and lack the flexibility of other spinal column sections.
  5. Coccygeal Spine Injury from Fall or Car Accident: This section, Coccyx vertebrae commonly called the tailbone, is the lowest of the spinal column, contains two vertebrae that frequently fuse in adults but only one spinal nerve bundle
