Panda Eyes and Raccoon Eyes are Symptoms of Head Trauma Periorbital ecchymosis, commonly known as panda eyes or raccoon eyes, are dark circles that appear around the eyes as a symptom of internal bleeding. Panada eyes and raccoon eyes are common terms used to refer to the medical condition known as periorbital ecchymosis. Panda eyes or raccoon eyes result from bleeding into the skin around the eyes causing a “black eye”. Bruises around both eyes is a symptom of internal bleeding, and in instances of a car accidents, slip and fall case, or other personal injury, periorbital ecchymosis is a hallmark indication of a head trauma or otherwise a blunt blow to the head.
