There is a rising number of UBER car accidents and LYFT car accidents. According to researchers, ridesharing services such as UBER and LYFT have contributed to the rise of fatal accidents.  BusinessInsider.com shed light on this issue in late 2018.

“By 2010, just before the ride-hailing services began to expand en masse, the total number of traffic fatalities sank to 32,885 nationwide, the lowest number since 1949, according to government data. But once Uber and Lyft began aggressively expanding, the authors of a yet-to-be-published study have found, those fatal accidents began to slowly rise once again…. ‘The arrival of ridesharing is associated with an increase of 2-3% in the number of motor vehicle fatalities and fatal accidents’ researchers John Barrios of the University of Chicago along with Yael Hochberg and Livia Hanyi Yi of Rice University, write in a draft of their paper, which is in the preliminary stages of publication”https://www.businessinsider.com/uber-lyft-ride-hailing-increases-fatal-car-accidents-new-research-shows-2018-10

In response to these growing statistics, the State of California has decided to license rideshare companies such as UBER and LYFT to protect both passengers and drivers in the event of an UBER Car Accident or a LYFT Car Accident.

UBER, LYFT and Rideshare Companies are Regulated by the California Public Utilities Commission

Transportation Network Company (“TNC”), such as UBER, LYFT and other rideshare service providers, is a company that uses Internet-based technology (typically a smart phone app) to link individuals selling transportation (drivers) with individuals who need transportation (customers). UBER, LYFT and other Rideshare Companies are licensed and regulated by the California Public Utilities Commission (“CPUC”).

As defined on CPUC’s website: Transportation Network Companies (TNCs) provide prearranged transportation services for compensation using an online-enabled application or platform (such as smart phone apps) to connect drivers using their personal vehicles with passengers.  For more information, you can follow the Commission’s TNC rulemaking process: Rulemaking 12-12-011.”

For more information on TNC licensing requirements, mandatory report filings, etc…, a link to the CPUC’s TNC’s page is included here: https://www.cpuc.ca.gov/tncinfo/. If you were involved in an UBER accident or LYFT accident, it is essential that you retain the services of a skilled rideshare accident attorney whom can confirm that the TNC regulations issued by the CPUC are satisfied and appropriately complied with.
